Oh man this just gets more and more close to home.

You know how I said I'd been there? The situation I was thinking about happened when I was 17. We were friends, then I asked her out, she said "Let me think about it." Then came a month or so of me agonizing and gradually losing hope. Then I called her and asked for a solid commitment and she said no.

Then, like a moron, I asked if she would go to prom with me, as friends. She actually laughed before she said no. Not in a mean way. She had been trying to let me down gently. But then when I asked her to prom as she was rejecting me, she just couldn't help laughing at the stupidity. It burst out involuntarily.

I don't blame her.

For the record I at least didn't mope around and feel sorry for myself. It was too late to ask any of my other female friends because they'd already agreed to go with someone else while I was waiting for this girl who didn't love me. So on prom night I went to Second City with another male friend who didn't have a date.
