That is a possibility, but not an inevitability. At least in Texas. I had debt from a broken lease sent to collections, did nothing, nothing happened, and it disappeared as if it was never there. The only downside other than the obvious temporary ding on my score was making it harder to rent because it was in the same category. That's it.

And most people don't need credit cards. In fact, it is probably a horrible idea for most people to have a credit card.
