Break each element down into its constituents and attempt to draw parallels between those constituents and the constituents that make up your culture. You'll start to find cases of "oh, this is like the XX of my age". Keep judgement out of the way until the very last step. As far as musical tastes and whatnot, you may never care for newer music.
