#59:

12,000 humans will be resupplied through continuously increasing procreation anyway, whereas cats going extinct would seriously affect the ecosystem.

Eventually, 'science might fix that' in part, but it would take many, many years to get to the equivalent of the presence of cats, mostly because all factors of the ecosystem would have to be taken into account and whatever solution would be presented needs to balanced just right. Because this would take which means a lot more than 12,000 humans would suffer and die in the end.

Preferences aside, if you had to choose, 12,000 humans would ultimately be a lesser loss for humanity, felinity, and the related ecosystem.

Simply put, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
