WayForward made that? No wonder the game felt well constructed yet somehow soulless.

I feel the opposite, that the games have plenty of soul (or at least personality, is there a difference?), but they aren't well constructed. Or at least the first two Shantae games, which is all I've played and they don't exactly make me want to come back for more.

I find it a little crazy that people even call them Metroidvanias. The level design is like kiddie Metroidvania at best. The only hard thing about them is the shitty, stiff movement and attacking combined with the thin life bar

This is interesting; I felt the WayForward games, particularly Shantae, had well executed and clever level design and boss design, but it was *so* well constructed that it felt very paint-by-numbers and soulless.

This is just the game design itself of course, as the characters more than make up for it
