Granted, I would still use terms like policeman, fireman, postman, etc for females of those occupations.

I always was of the belief/understanding that the base term was genderless/undefined, whereas actress can only be used for female actors. (But doesn't have to be used)

Officer, Firefighter, Femailman, etc.
