To try to address the question seriously, Link is more of an archetype than he is a character. He's designed to have very little definition outside of his heroic traits. By being a relatively blank slate it's almost a given that players will fill in the gaps with themselves. On this list, Crono is probably the only other character who matches Link in terms of such careful construction so as to maximize the invitation of "come and BE this character". And when you factor in Link's longevity and how well received his games have been over the decades, his fan base doesn't really dwindle.
