Perhaps we should force electoral candidates to at least meet a minimum set of requirements, some which are permanent, some which can be updated with the times. For example, maybe white supremacists can never be in office. Also maybe someone shouldn't be able to make legislation on something scientific without major peer reviewed scientific backing. This is what's known as a meritocracy and while it looks good on paper, it has historically produced results far worse than even communism because of how vulnerable to corruption the system is.
