Kylo is a classic abuser. When she has all the power he uses force, when the power is more equal he uses other means. We can tell this after they beat the guards. The first thing the he does is tells he that no one loved her with her parents ....which is the turning point in the story where Kylo becomes clearly more villainous, and the point where Rey rejects him, and the music even takes a dark, villainous cue directly after he says it just to underline that fact.
