Just answer an easy binary question: what would work better for making someone less violent and rehabilitating back into society: stigmatizing them and attacking them, or reaching out to them and trying to help.

in a perfect world, the latter.

we do not live in a perfect world.

guarantee this kid was radicalised on 4chan or some other internet shithole.

how many times have you been able to successfully convince an internet troll they were being a bad person and they changed?

This. Even ones who aren't hateful, just gullible and misguided aren't always redeemable. I saw a story about Islamic radicalization that featured teenagers and children who were recruited to be suicide bombers and were caught before able to do an attack. They had literally been told "the bomb explodes outward in one direction. You'll kill your enemies but no harm will come to you." They were naive enough to believe it. It was explained that it doesn't work that way, they were being used etc. The rehabilitation efforts often didn't work and some of the same kids were caught again trying to do suicide attacks after being released the first time after rehabilitation.
