Topic | Temperament aside, why is Trump not liked? |
ultimate reaver 11/28/18 3:21:39 PM #49: | -Trump is an absolute hot mess on immigration. Familial separations, wasting taxpayer dollars on a grandstanding stunt with troops being sent to an area nowhere near the caravan, he's constantly pushing for his enormous waste-of-time-and-money border wall. All while giving excuses about Obama, under whom immigration law could certainly be pretty shitty, but nothing approximating what he was doing. -Trump's trade policies are incredibly stupid. The aluminum and steel tariffs are entirely useless, harmful to us, and he's having to backtrack and pay out even more money for aid programs towards groups affected by them while getting not much more out of it than a small bolster to American steel mills (which are already our prime source of steel already) and the chance to play strongman big boy #1. -He is perpetuating the do-nothing attitude that the last few presidencies have taken towards climate change, but going even further in the form of putting anti-environmentalists in positions of power in the EPA, trying to cut alternative energy programs, pushing anti-climate-change talking points (in flim-flammy ineffectual ways but still half-heartedly trying) and essentially just being a complete puppet of fossil fuel and mining lobbies. Bonus round stuff that you might try to categorize under his "temperament" -Trump is a wretched, embarrassing figure in terms of foreign policy. He is alternatively a laughing stock for most people and a useful idiot for right wing foreign regimes in terms of interactions with people abroad. Repeatedly making dramatic threats to pull out of NATO, getting openly laughed at while speaking to the UN, attempting to strong arm the president of Iraq for oil, cowing to Saudi Arabia in the most embarrassing ways possible, interfering with the war in the Middle-East in the most inflammatory attention-grabbing way possible... Trump has been an utter failure in every sense of the word in terms of foreign policy and abroad and has done nothing but damage our image in just about everyone's eyes. The closest thing he came to a victory was with talking with North Korea, but anyone who has actually paid attention to North Korea over the past two decades knows that they will occasionally behave that way only to double back in some sort of weird strongman show and try to paint the US as a insidious party seeking to take over and westernize, and themselves as heroic and resisting outside influences. Basically, they outdid him because they've been doing the sort of hollow empty shows Trump excels at for faaaar longer than him. --- butts ... Copied to Clipboard! |
