Are people just obtuse?

Yes. People aren't logic computers. How something "feels" will often the actual tangible benefits of that thing.

Before Netflix, TV streaming basically consisted of the shitty flash players that each network had that would stream the show with commercials for free. Then Hulu came along and consolidated that into a more single hub, still with commercials for free. Then Netflix hit, it was a paid service but you got an ad-free viewing experience. Amazon Prime also started streaming and it too was ad-free.

Hulu eventually started a subscription service but it was not ad-free. It had ads, which up until this point had been associated with the free services (previously including Hulu). The library increased, but from a pure viewer experience perspective, it was still more comparable to the free services rather than the subscription ones. And that often overrides the fairness of the pricing or the size of the library when it comes to the customer judging a service. It's not fair, but that's life.
