Europe is never mentioned. All Nintendo consoles did shit in Europe until the Wii came out. N64 sold like 5 million. GameCube sold around 4 million. SNES, N64 and Gamecube were all culturally relevant here. The SNES was definitely second place - the most fondly remembered games of the era from people I speak to are Sonic and Streets of Rage, with the odd person here or there having played Super Mario World. I'm sure that Mario characters do just fine in Europe so I don't accept that categorically Nintendo was weak here pre-Wii.
