1,500 people at one of Sydneys most elite Catholic high schools rose to their feet in a standing ovation after then 17-year-old student Finn Stannard told them he is gay.

Said Stannard to his school: Announcing yourself to the world is pretty terrifying because, what if the world doesnt like you?

When I said it just felt this energy pass through me and I felt that was the first time Id really been proud of who I was. I could announce it to all these people who were before meLife was easier living as the straight eldest son. I had spent so long behind the faade of a confident, heterosexual man that I wasnt sure if I knew how to be me. I think thats really the biggest reason I made sure I got up onto that stage and gave the speech. I dont think anybody should have to go through the feeling of loss that I felt like Id gone through.

Do you guys think it's getting easier and easier for gay people these days? It seems like acceptance continues to rise in developed countries.
