I don't like gifts.

Understandable as some folk feel obliged to return the gesture and gift buying can be rather stressful.

To me it just mean they didn't bother trying.

Perhaps but they have indeed thought of said person in order to give them a gift in the first place.

A good gift is one that is personally selected for that individual and catered to them. Anything else is shallow and shows a lack of interest

Yet money could buy you that gift anyway. Although with that said if I had a other half or something I wouldn't be giving cash. I also wouldn't ask folk what they want as I prefer to surprise them. That's unless of course they have dropped hints. For family members though yeah I've no issue giving cash.

I always try to pick something unique and interesting when I buy someone a gift. Cash is like, "Yeah, you don't mean enough to me to put any effort into picking something out."

It's a bit sad that some folk think gifts value thought represent how someone feels about them. I'm grateful to receive any gift in the first place no matter what it is as it shows that said person actually cares enough to give me a gift. It's not about what the gift is as when you're a adult you can buy whatever you want/need anyway(within reason) it's more about the thought. As for surprises I'm 50/50 on how I feel about them. Sometimes it feels great to not know the gift until you open it. Other times it's just disappointing as bad as that sounds. Opening something and knowing what it is is just meh.
