The plan would then be to send a big satellite out to sit next to the asteroid for years, slowly altering the path via gravitational pull between the asteroid and satellite. Altering the path by just a tiny fraction of a degree when it is travelling that huge distance would cause it to miss. This. But in a short term emergency the best course would be successive nuking. Blast it apart and keep blasting each fragment until theyre small enough to uust burn in the atmosphere. May end up irradiating most of the planet but that can be dealt with somewhat.
