They are strictly talking about area here, when you have a big circle, and that circle is expanding slowly in every direction, the speed that the area is increasing is massive. So the fire was spreading in all directions at a decent speed, but add all that area up and it becomes a big area in a short amount of time.

You are thinking of velocity in a straight line, like someone living 80 football fields (4.5 miles) away from the fire will have their house catch in 60 seconds... that is just insanity lol
