Because that would be kind of stupid... Relationships are for the dungeons. In a crossroad, you get an option to do a campfire and select a character to talk about a topic. If the characters like each other then you gain back more stamina (the dungeon stamina, that is. The number next to the smiley face), basically. And yeah the stamina is consumed automatically. You can save them but... you'll never run out unless you play all day without pause. I have like 500 stam and can't go further below it because they give away so much stam Mercedes should be replaced with literally anybody (replace her with Silk if you're not already using her). I love her in the story but jesus christ she sucks lol. If you're using Silk, go for the 3* light healer kid you unlock not long into the game.
