My biggest shock was finding out the anime was still relevant past the 3rd Gen (I stopped watching after the Johto League), especially within the ones who started out with the first season and still watched it when already grown up. The show was always supposed to be aimed towards children, so it didn't make sense to me that older people complained about it. I tried giving it a shot (while also bringing my brother up with me), watching some random XYZ episodes, namely Frogadier's and Flabb's, and it was nice but not really enough to hook me up like any other show would.

The anime is very..inconsistent
There are some episodes that I would recommend to every (like the Ash vs Paul you mentioned, but most Paul episodes can work as well) and some of them are super damn kiddy that it hurt me to watch them
Thing is, I usually watched them will doing something else, most of the time Pokemon-related like soft resetting for a good nature legendary, or filling the dex, or hunting for a shiny or something like that, hatching eggs etc
So it didn't really feel like a waste of time

But the Sun and Moon anime? no thank you
