I'd hate to travel to what I think is a free western democracy and then suddenly encounter something like this. What I've picked up is that basically the rule of thumb when crossing any border is to wipe your phone and have it backed up somewhere in the cloud with a service you trust. After you've crossed redownload everything, depending on your mobile platform setting everything up again could be a huge pain in the ass or easy. Also generally I've heard it is responsible to use a VPN while traveling because as a foreigner you have no privacy rights afforded to citizens of that country.
