The guys crime doesn't even hold a candle to what the crazy women did. The man you love and presumably provides for you dies suddenly. You're in debt, have no reason to live anymore and no way to look after your kids. China treats orphans the same way you treat dog turds. So in a broken mental state her wrecked mind decided she couldn't cope anymore and she did not want her children to suffer. Reminds me of that age old moral dilema about whether it is meriful to let someone live despite being in agonizing pain every moment of every day or kill them to spare them of that pain. That's basically how her mind was processing it. Her mental state died when her husband physical one did.
