If you feel like a character being changed to sell to a demographic adds nothing as a storytelling element (or, worse, makes the storytelling more convoluted or poor just because they had to bend over backwards to justify it after they did) then it can drive people away. Though people leaving BECAUSE of the forced diversity is more likely.
