Not my theory, but I read one once that Phoebe on "Friends" wasn't a member of the group at all but spent the entire run of the series watching them through the window of Central Perk and fantasizing about being their friend. Maybe I saw it on here??

It honestly makes more sense. She's a complete sociopath and a jerk and no one ever calls her out for it. Even after like 9 years of mistreating, manipulating, and generally being a complete jackass, everyone considers her family.

Weren't they all kind of jerks, though, each in his/her own way? Or at least self-centered.

Yeah, at times, they were all jerks. The difference, though, is that Monica, Chandler, and Joey had some serious redeeming moments. Chandler, in particular, was pretty much the guy everyone went to for a shoulder to cry on. Rachel, on the other hand, actually gets a lot better, and has the excuse that she doesn't really realize what she is doing wrong. Joey is far too stupid to realize when he is a jerk. Ross has a mental breakdown throughout the series.

Phoebe, on the other hand, actively brags about how smart she is and how great she is at manipulating everyone else. Not only does she never do anything nice for any of the other friends, but she also brags about manipulating them. Where the others either have redeeming moments of, you know, actually be friends, or are just too stupid to realize how selfish they are being, Phoebe knows better and brags that she is a bad friend constantly.
