Sorry but I don't buy into the "I had no choice but to be a bad person" mentality. I mean, that is what you're arguing isn't? That some people join gangs out of necessity and not out of choice? No, there's always a choice. Granted, those choices can suck and doing something like joining a gang can be easier and even safer then the other options but that doesn't mean there wasn't other options out there. I mean, if a white dude gets locked up and joins the Aryan Brotherhood because it's safer for him then being on his own are you going to say that his being a Neo Nazi out of "necessity" doesn't say anything about his character? It's understandable why someone would do that something like that in a "I must survive" sense but that doesn't mean you're not a douche for doing it.
