Starting on the second floor, if you can beat the floor without taking red heart damage you'll have a chance to access a special room after you beat the boss. The items you get in these rooms can make or break a run. Memorize enemy patterns and look up what the items you're getting do in a wiki, as the in game explanation are super poor and sometimes not intuitive at all. Above all, learn to accept the fact that you're gonna die a lot in this game, you get better by playing and improving, or getting lucky with the items you're given. I'd recommend turning on the advanced hud so you can see your stats and how much each item improves them (and what they improve). If you have any questions, feel free to hit me up.
