I think they're usually the charm of FF games that a lot of other games don't really capture for me.
2 party members have no reason to exist, one of them being the main character sadly. The story is a little different than the usual FF, since it revolves around politics and shadowy plots.
For what it's worth, I didn't really like the story when it came out, but when I played the remake last year I could tolerate it. The 2 characters I mentioned are still pretty useless in the narrative though.
