But to answer TC's question, everyone has a point where "it's not funny anymore".

For many professional comedians, that point raises higher than the average person, because it's their bread and butter: pointing out the absurdities of life and spinning them into a tale that resonates and entertains. They have to find a way to make lemonade out of lemons because it's how they can get to people.

Colbert made his name off mockery of the administration at the time (W Bush) and while there was a hell of a lot of buffoonery to pull material from, rarely did you get the sense that things would get worse simply because the President was unhinged, a bully, or easily provoked.

In short, reality reached a point where it was actually scary to Colbert, and he couldn't in good conscience try to spin everything into simple jokes to pretend everything was going to be okay, because he himself is unsure if it is.
