The high crime city where I live, checkpoints found over 10% of cars stopped with no driver's license or suspended/revoked license. Solution? The police stopped doing random checkpoints. So, does taking the license accomplish anything?

That said, there is a lot of merit in the idea of requiring mandatory retesting after, say, age 60. That's a specific subset of bad drivers, though.

In the UK you need to renew regularly and get eye tests when you reach retirement.


That's sensible and would cut down on a lot of the old age-related collisions. Good luck getting such legislation passed with all of the baby boomers in their 60's now, though.

Check the statistics: age-related risk of accidents, highest risk 16-45. accident rates start dropping after age 45 with the lowest risk of accidents: 65 and older.
