If it's asking for an electronic signature it usually means they're accepting plain text as a signature.

If you're not given the option then, yes, you're expected to print it, sign it, then scan it back in signed.

If you have some kind of certificate you can also sign it using Adobe. It'll import your certificate and use it to sign the document.

A signature is just an affirmation anyway. In reality there is no specific legal or binding mandate that a signature has to be anything more than the consenting party visually providing affirmation of the preceding document. It doesn't have to be handwritten in cursive or anything.
