I was naive enough once to give my mother a small loan since she wanted to return to school; imagine my surprise when she called and asked if she could spend the money on clothes instead (never realized she was so desperate for them since she never mentioned it before I sent the funds). While I didn't expect repayment, I did expect her to use it for the purpose she'd told me that she'd use it for; so I haven't loaned any more money to my family since, even though a couple of family members could've used it at the time. In fact one of them thanked me for not loaning them money because they didn't want to become dependent on the handout.
