Story is a few years old, but I'm posting it because everyone at my college just got an email about it and the dangers of cycling on campus. Mind you, the student who died was not the one cycling; he was struck by someone who was cycling on the sidewalk, hit his head on the ground, and died months later.

Cyclists using the sidewalk instead of the road is one of my biggest pet peeves of all time. On my campus, I constantly see cyclists using the sidewalk instead of the road... this is illegal in most states. Bicycles are NOT pedestrians... they are vehicles, and thus you have to treat them like vehicles. You don't see cars driving on the shoulder or using the sidewalk as a passing lane.

Whenever a cyclist ZOOMS past me on the sidewalk, I get a dark urge to shove the cyclist to the ground for breaking the law. Often, they are going so fast that if someone in front of them got in the way, they would be going too fast to react. If you are a cyclist, PLEASE obey traffic laws and use the road, and NOT the sidewalk.
