Why is it selfish and how does it have those negative effects? Explain please cuz I just don't get it.

Well, don't The Last of Us, or other apocalyptic medias teach you differently as generally, in times of crises, people cling together like glue. You walk down a battered road, if someone is already there, you'll gravitate to each other to move together. Every restaurant who can't continue to function thanks to the loss of power will be cooking and giving away their food. There's a mutual understanding that you can't do this alone, you have to work together to survive. Looting only benefits the looter, and sights of one will cause someone to worry in fear of them being the less target, you don't need that stress after worrying about what remains of your house after the hurricane.

And yes, I was hit by Irma and Maria last year if this helps strengthen my word.

Dude did you even play TLOU? A major part of the story is the terrible murders and etc. Joel did just because he thought it would help him survive at the time. So no TLOU doesn't really teach that at all tbh.
