The brony fandom's shift mostly goes back to the places which became most popular and the ones that didn't, tbh. In its infancy the best place to find them was Ponychan, which was a really tightly moderated imageboard that reminds me more of older GameFAQS than anything. As a result, it was actually a pretty damn good community and full of genuinely nice people. But even as far back as that, you could see a ton of splintering in the community as more and more people wanted to co-opt 4chan culture because that's where a lot of people were run off of, and a combination of the opening of a MLP board on 4chan and the dissolution of Ponychan's culture into a bunch of horrible little side-sites sort of rolled a lot of people back into acting like assholes. The leftovers mostly moved on to other stuff or disappeared into the depths of the internet.

It's that, plus the fact that the fandom is a loooooot smaller than it was during those first two or three years, and people you see proudly flying pony flags nowadays are usually the most diehard hanger-ons, which are always more likely to be total gross weirdos in -any- fandom. Really socially inept people that blame society for all their problems was definitely a thing in the heyday, but it's the loudest part of things now. Populism makes its biggest bank off of attracting the misguided and disaffected.
