He admits that they should invoke the 25th amendment early on but that it would be hard and yucky and cause a constitutional crisis (Which is kind of the point if you are considering the 25th amendment). So instead we are going to undermine him on...things.


I think this goes along with the main criticism I've seen which is that this does little to "stabilize" Trump. Like if you're behind the scenes keeping things together, what purpose does this op-ed fulfill?

If Trump is distracted by this, they might find it easier to manage him in other areas.

Alternatively, they see the writing on the wall, they have failed and now they are looking to lay some groundwork down for good-faith in their future political careers.
