If you start recording in the middle of a confrontation, you'd likely be missing the context required to properly analyze everyone's actions in the video. So if you only start recording at the part where the officer is giving the suspect a beat down, you may be missing the part where the suspect drew a weapon and attempted to kill the officer. Once that video is posted to social media, the court of public opinion has tried, convicted, and executed the officer for his actions and given a pass to the suspect despite his attempting to murder the officer before the camera started recording.

At least with body cams the officer can provide full context of the confrontation so that the public isn't as easily manipulated by fake news.


This is a good point.

Removal of prior context can make very justified actions look like a terrible abuse of power.
