Obviously straight up walking in dirt is worse but the fact of the matter is, you aren't really going to be able to avoid it. Keep in mind it's not only outside stuff that matters, you walk around in public bathrooms and other dirty areas as well.

So rather than track in some particulates from your office building, you'll instead track bacteria and sweat from your bare feet everywhere.
