Saying someone looks stupid is still basically just calling them stupid. No it isn't, not even close. In fact its basically implying they're not stupid, but are appearing stupid atm due to some stupid action they made. You don't say "you look stupid right now" to a stupid person, you say it to someone who isn't stupid that made a mistake. It could honestly be interpreted either way.
