So at the start of the interaction, she was the first girl I talked to right after I got into the clubI really didnt want to overthink it. So I walked by her, saw her staring into the middle distance, stopped and said to her the first things that popped into my head: wow, your eyes are like lazers, I can practically feel them burning into me as I walked by. She said oh, sorry Im just really distracted. Not much to work with, but unlike most guys I know how to keep the conversation going. I say you should never apologize for intensity. Sometimes I do the same thing, its called the 1,000 yard stare, usually seen in people with PTSDand those of us with too much intensity. I prodded in the right direction and she opens up a bit more and says yeah, I have this whole thing going on with my friends right now. A little too early to prod further, but I make a mental note Ill want those details later. Were past the opening sequence now and are decently locked into conversation, so as good a time as any to introduce ourselves and exchange names. I always make a point to exchange names early. Names have a lot of poweronce you know someones name they are no longer a stranger. She hasnt opened up enough yet for me to sit down without it being awkward (it would only be slightly awkward, but every little bit matters). I would sit down if she started asking me questions, flirting with me or asked me to sit down. At any of those points it becomes too awkward to keep standing. I want a little bit more details about what brings her to vegas, as that can provide valuable information (business trip, bachelorette party, etc would all have different meanings). So she tells me to sit down and then tells me about how she came out here with friends, but they all got into a big fight so she came out alone tonight. Excellent, as I mentally noted earlier I needed all that info. Now I know her boyfriend wasnt just buying them drinks and will come over and get upset, I know why shes in a downer mood, etc.
So, so far, all Ive done is started the interaction, exchanged names and gotten some logisticsall very surface stuff but very important. And just as important, I havent done anything wrong.
But now I see a chance to kind of transfer the narrative of the conversation. I want the narrative of the conversation to be about her and me, not us talking about how her friends got into the fight. In fact, now that I know this, I realize why she came out tonightso she can meet a cool good looking guy and this night/trip will be salvaged.
