Samwise Gamgee

oh god this is pretty true too. don't get me started on him. I used to rant about him being the true hero of Middle Earth all the time

Almost everyone in LOTR does something truly heroic. Sam is definitely the one who stands out most though.

I think Sam stands out because he's not a long-lost King's heir, a dwarven warrior, an elven prince, an ancient wizard, a horse lord, or even the bearer of the one ring. He was just Frodo's gardener.

And that gardener, at one point, had to literally carry Frodo's ass up Mt. Doom. He was always totally loyal and dedicated to Frodo and his cause. Even after all the time he spent with Frodo, he didn't even seem to consider taking the ring for himself and even when it fell to him to briefly carry it, he gave it up like it was no big deal. It was almost like whatever is in a person that the ring corrupts, greed or a lust for power, Sam didn't have in him.

He was just a simple hobbit gardener, but he was brave, resilient, dedicated, and loyal to his friend.

My wife, her brother, and I just recently finished watching the trilogy and sometimes it felt like if they had given the ring to Sam to take to Mt. Doom, the job would have been done in half the time and with a lot less trouble. Like Frodo would have just gotten in Sam's way. But then, would Sam have been so heroic if his friend didn't need his support so much?
