My document count since 12/1/2014 (when I got a permanent position; was originally an LTE) is 77,213 - yes, it keeps track automatically. I have gotten much more efficient since I started - now I outright manage the documents (not the SharePoint itself, however). I used to be a manager at a scanning company like 12 years ago. I'm sure you understand how boring this is, then!
