| Inviso 08/18/18 1:25:13 AM #41: | 5. Balthier Yeah, Balthier outranks Fran despite the fact that I'm far more likely to save her than him when push comes to shove. FFXII, as I believe I said in Fran's write-up (or maybe it was Penelo's), is a very brown and dull game. Gameplay is fine, but the story is...not great. But then in the middle of all that blandness, you get this suave, charming guy like Balthier who just stands out in a franchise that has become more and more over-the-top and exuberant in terms of the personalities in each playable cast. We first meet Balthier in the midst of trying to out-thief Vaan, which really isn't that hard because JFC Vaan is terrible. But this leads to Balthier getting roped into Ashe's plans, and although Balthier easily could've sunk into melodrama with his connection to one of the game's antagonists, he just kinda let Cid's presence roll of his shoulders. I liked it. I liked having this cool badass who could spout one-liners and hung out with a hot Viera. He's like the Lando Calrissian opf Final Fantasy, and that's awesome. --- Touch fuzzy.
