What I really don't like, is how everyone knew that specific race was the first puzzle and didn't try anything innovative to solve it. Also, If someone as poor as Parzival could afford to constantly play it, other dedicated hunters would definitely be able to afford it. Especially a pro hunter like aech.

The people the IOI had actually participating in the events weren't multi-billion dollar income people though and they also weren't the scholars. They literally showed you that they entrap people with debt and use them to make them money. Those are the people they are putting in the events.

Also, I don't think you had to pay anything to participate in the race, but if you did anything that got you killed while racing you would have 0 money in game and irl.
