Do you have anything in mind? Veggies and annuals are a good place to start. Determine if your location is more sun or shade and choose accordingly. Any deer problems in the area? Perennials will come back year after year but they only bloom for a portion of the year. Then trees and shrubs will take a little more digging and planning but once they're established you shouldn't have to worry much.

Seeds are extra work. That's more for the early spring when you want to start things indoors. If your ground is crap then plant in containers. People worry about gardening because they imagine you need to start big.
