The only real continuity that Bond has is the death of his wife which has been referenced multiple times throughout the series. The opening scene of For Your Eyes Only was meant to tie the series together and show that they were the same Bond. Personally, I like to think of A View to a Kill as the end of the original series with the Dalton and Brosnan Bonds being in their own timeline.
