Everybody just expects new Sonic games to suck, so most people only bother with the good ones. I think would probably take a huge string of consistently bad games or a massive Sonic 2006-level failure to really swing opinions on him much. Without that, he'll probably be fine just riding nostalgia and the occasional good game. Also, I think it helps that pretty much everybody regards the Sonic franchise as a bit of a joke these days.
