Kathy Kane was created in the fifties as a romantic interest for Batman because of the allegations that Batman and Robin were a gay couple. The character fell into Obscurity. She was reinvented in 2006 as Kate Kane, with one of the main points of the character being that she's a lesbian. Kind of funny for a character created to prove batman wasn't gay.
