Then there are the countless chances they have to save money yet choose to buy something frivolous (starbucks coffee everyday, large on every fast food meal, etc...)

This is why I am never sympathetic to those

So they're supposed to just give up on everyday things that make life a little less miserable for them? What would be the point of living without the little pleasant stuff?

remember: if you give up everything that makes you happy for a whole year, you can have a savings account with $400 in it
