I went to a Christian elementary school in the mid-'70s and they freely gave out those Chick comics, both the little ones and the regular sized ones. We were encouraged to put them on busses, on magazine stands, etc. I used to put them on top of my regular comics at home - not to hide my regular comics (my parents didn't care) but to "look" like I was a good kid in case I got caught for something. Looking back at some of the preachy, determinist themes in the comics it's concerning now but as a kid -for me at least- not too much sunk in. The guy had some weird views though. He and his supporters went absolutely apeshit over Dungeons & Dragons ("witchcraft") Star Wars ("the Force is a euphemism for Satan") and other stuff. It's funny how paranoid some people can get.
