The emotional (and physical) impact of rape or sexual abuse has on someone is not suddenly less impactful simply because the victim is a male.

has to do with the gender roles we associate with men, which have changed very little in the past century, despite a dramatic change in the roles we associate with women.

there's been a lot of chaos from that. hypocrisy in how we treat male victims is just one facet of it. the widespread phenomena of men being somewhat unsure what to do with themselves now that women are their own providers and that role of theirs is conditioned into them but not productive in achieving their own life goals is another.

probably the biggest one, though, is the emphasis in which we socialize men to primarily bond with their romantic partners. it has led to an entire generation of adult men with no close friends other than their spouse. in the event of divorce, these men have a very rough time.
