Now I confess I don't know enough about Islam myself but aren't the considered the exact opposite of progressive?
It actually seems to be a common belief by the right that Muslims/Islamists are liberals. I know it sounds hilarious but when you think about it, that's the logical conclusion when your starting point is the bizarre tribal mentality of American right-wingers. They just see liberals stick up for Muslims and lump them all together.
I browse 4chan (extremely right-wing skewed site, for anyone who hasn't been there) and I've seen people there make the same claim.
